In the final moments of the movie, epilogue text tells us that when the artifacts found at the site were finally displayed to the public after the end of the war, Brown’s name wasn’t even mentioned as a footnote. Their arrival threatens Brown’s authority on the site, and indeed his very legacy, which like the Sutton Hoo treasure he discovered, lay dormant for years. As it turns out, her land is the site of a nearly intact Anglo-Saxon royal burial ship, a groundbreaking discovery that attracts the attention of the toffs at the British Museum. The ultimate fates of the characters in The Dig’s bittersweet ending are also largely unaltered.

As word of the find spread, Charles Phillips (Ken Stott) and his team of archaeologists took over the excavation under the urgency of the looming threat of World War II. In 1939, Edith Pretty (played in the movie by Carey Mulligan) hired self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to excavate the burial mounds on her land. The movie sticks to the truth with the foundations of the story, and most of the characters in The Dig movie are based on real people involved in the excavation.
